Anxiety Therapy

While a natural response to burdens, anxiety can easily become debilitating and chronic as coping mechanisms become less effective. The physical effects sometimes manifest in the form of a racing heart, a pit in your stomach or a tight chest among many other iterations. This in combination with the often experienced fear, worry and sense of overwhelm often accompanied with such feelings can be exhausting. Seeking support in a safe and non-judgemental space will assist in rebalancing your nervous system. As an anxiety based therapist in Vancouver, BC, I will assist in offering you tools to better manage your stress and anxiety while improving your overall well-being.

Suffering in Silence: A Therapist's Role in Easing Anxiety

Like most struggles in life, anxiety is not meant to be tackled alone. Leaning into the support of a trusted professional allows for the following:

When we experience short, manageable and temporary bouts of anxiety we can often use them to our advantage in the form of protection. However, when such anxiety morphs into more chronic, intense and unmanageable episodes it can easily manifest as an anxiety disorder. Such disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, affecting millions of people worldwide. Iterations under the umbrella term include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobias.

Benefits of Seeking Support

  • Professional Guidance: Therapists have the very specialized training and expertise to help you understand the root causes of your anxiety. Not only are they capable of hey providing alternate ways of thinking or potential insights, so too do they hold space for the processing, experiencing and understanding as experienced on behalf of the client.
  • Personalized Support Plans: There is no one size fits all. Just like every individual's experience with anxiety is unique. Therapists work to create a support plan specific to your needs. When met with  a sense of commitment and willingness, success becomes possible.
  • Effective Coping Strategies: Many therapists will offer practical coping strategies that can help manage the symptoms of your anxiety. Such offerings may include but are not limited to relaxation techniques, mindfulness based exercises, and cognitive-behavioural strategies to challenge and change negative thought patterns.

  • Emotional Support: One of the most significant benefits of therapy is having a safe and non-judgmental space to feel heard. Allow your therapist to hold space for your potentially exhausting and overwhelming emotions so as to feel understood and validated.
  • Skill Development: Therapy can equip you with skills necessary to handle future anxiety-provoking situations with increasing ease and success. By learning and practicing such skills, it is entirely possible for a  deeper sense of resiliency to emerge which lessens anxiety.
  • Long-Term Improvement: Many supports including those that are skill based, preventative in nature or medicinal can become increasingly effective when used in combination with talk therapy.  By addressing the root causes and developing healthy coping mechanisms, lasting improvement and decreased anxiety levels are possible.
